Indonesia Still 'Foreign' Eggs and Chicken Meat
The level of protein consumption of chicken and eggs in Indonesia lagging far behind than other countries. The problem is not with the high prices or lack of supply of animal products, but due to low education.
Prof. Dr. Ir. Khomsan Ali, Professor of Food and Nutrition Institute of Agriculture Bogor (IPB) said, the consumption of animal protein, Indonesian society is still far behind compared to neighboring countries like Malaysia and Singapore.
"In fact, this protein is closely related to one's intellectual capacity and development of the brain," he said when met at seminar 'Towards a More Poultry Products Availability of Healthy and hygienic' in Jakarta on Thursday (8 / 7) yesterday.
Look at Indonesian chicken meat consumption, which is only 4.5 kg / capita / year. This figure is one-eighth Malaysia consumption which reached number 38 kg / capita / year. Similarly, Singapore which reaches 28 kg / capita per year.
Not just chicken. Indonesia also has the same alienation egg products. With a large population, consumption of eggs is very small island countries, ie 50 eggs per capita per year. Compare this with Japan as much as 269 points and England reached 290 eggs.
According to Ali Khomsan, lack of adequate protein intake, will make someone think slow and has not been optimal brain development. "The long term impact on the country because of the lack of qualified human resources," he said.
Based on UNICEF data, in West Java, about 20 to 30% of toddlers aged 1 to 3 years did not consume meat, eggs and liver. While the WHO data in 2002 revealed, the high infant mortality due to malnutrition reaches 54%.
Ali said the problem of malnutrition and a scourge to society due to lack of knowledge about good nutrition. In fact, the price of eggs and chicken meat is actually quite cheap and the supply of animal products on the market quite a lot.
"Basically, if we all understand that good nutrition, not only about the rice, but also concerning the protein, under-five mortality due to malnutrition can be reduced," he concluded.
Similar disclosed Dr. Desianto B. Utomo, Chairman of the Poultry Science Society of Indonesia. According to him, one of the reasons that led to the Indonesian people lazy 'glance' eggs and chicken meat products is the lack of knowledge about the benefits of chicken meat and egg products, rather than red meat.
He also hoped the government also would provide subsidies for eggs and chicken, in addition to red meat. "It is intended that the public is indirectly become more aware of the positive function of consumption of eggs and chicken," he said.
Desianto explain the link between level of education by spending public protein. Based on research, he added, comparison shopping has the same protein with a country's level of education.
Countries with a total average income is below U.S. $ 5 thousand (USD 45.5 million) has a protein expenditure is directly proportional to the level of education. "This means, the lower the education in a country, then the lower the demand for animal protein." He described.
Consumerism lifestyle was also a factor that alienate the public from chicken meat and egg products. From the research revealed a private bank, shopping cigarettes and pulse Indonesian society is still far higher than the consumption of animal protein. "Most people prefer to spend money to buy credits rather than eat eggs that are obviously beneficial to health," he complained.
According Desianto, is not actually a problem in the supply of animal products in the country. The poultry business in Indonesia, even still capable of producing 40% more than the amount of the overall needs of the people of Indonesia.
While in terms of business, land poultry businesses still have a very high prospect. This is supported by a population which is the market potential. The only problem is the material that is still a lot of poultry imports. "In fact, 70% to 80% of the total cost is feed
